Sectional gutters — the bolt-together lengths from the home center — have a joint every ten feet, and every joint is a seam sealed with caulk. Houston's heat cycles work that caulk loose in a few years, and then each seam becomes a slow drip line right at your fascia. Seamless gutters are formed from a continuous coil on site, so a forty-foot run is one piece of metal. The only joints are at corners and outlets, which cuts the places a gutter can leak by roughly ninety percent. That's the whole argument. It's not fancier — it's fewer holes.
Standard 5-inch gutters handle most Houston homes fine, and we won't upsell you past what your roof needs. But sizing is real math, not preference: it's driven by how many square feet of roof drain into each run and how steep those slopes are. Big roof planes, steep pitches that shoot water fast, or long runs with few downspouts can overwhelm a 5-inch gutter in the kind of inches-per-hour downpour Houston delivers several times a year — and an overflowing gutter is just an expensive way to water your foundation. In those cases we'll recommend 6-inch gutters with oversized 3x4 downspouts, tell you which runs actually need it, and leave the rest at 5-inch. You get the reasoning with the quote, not just a number.
Gutter guards are the most oversold product in this business, so here's the honest version. What guards actually do: keep out leaves and large debris, stretch cleaning from twice a year to every year or two, and stop the clogs that cause most overflow damage. What no guard does: eliminate maintenance forever. Anyone promising that is charging you for a promise they won't be around to keep.
Under pine trees, needles slide through wide screens and mat into a waterproof felt inside the gutter — the worst clog there is. Pines call for fine micro-mesh, which is the more expensive option but the only one that actually works there. Under live oaks, the spring tassel drop is the enemy: tassels are small enough to defeat cheap screens too, and they'll also sit on top of micro-mesh until a rain or a leaf blower clears them — better than inside the gutter, but not zero effort. Cheap foam inserts and bargain snap-in screens we'll talk you out of under any tree; they clog on top, breed seedlings, and make cleaning harder, not easier.
If your roofline has little or no tree canopy over it, guards mostly protect you from a chore you barely have. Twice-a-year cleaning on a low, open roof is cheap; guards there are a solution hunting for a problem, and we'll say so. Where they earn their price is heavy canopy, tall or steep rooflines where cleaning means a dangerous ladder day, or homes where a clogged gutter has already caused fascia or foundation trouble once.
When we quote a complete roof replacement, new seamless gutters are in the number. Not an add-on line, not an upsell at the kitchen table — included. The reason is practical, not promotional: a replacement means new drip edge and new fascia-line detailing, and old gutters almost never rehang cleanly against new edge metal. Reusing ten-year-old gutters on a brand-new roof means new shingles draining into pitted, mis-pitched runs — a job half done. So we finish the job: tear-off to final ridge cap to new gutters and downspouts, one crew, one to two days, one price.
And if your roof has years left in it? Standalone gutter installs and repairs are a normal week's work for us — you don't need to buy a roof to get your drainage fixed. Gutters here live a harder life than the national advice assumes, so the schedule is different. Late spring (after the oak tassels finish dropping): clear the gutters and flush the downspouts with a hose — if water backs up, the clog is in the downspout, not the run. Before hurricane season peaks: a quick visual check that runs are tight to the fascia and nothing is sagging; a loaded gutter in 60 mph gusts becomes a lever working against your roofline. Late fall: full clean after leaf drop, and check that extensions and splash blocks still carry water away from the slab — they wander over a season of mowing.
